I) PRESENTATION

Vision: to prepare and train a critical mass of experts all across Africa in the field of membrane technologies and fluid treatment processes. By fluid, it is meant a liquid, a gas or a vapor phase.

Mission: to open a forum of exchange on membrane sciences, processes, and fluid treatment systems in Africa. The main objectives are to:
a) Initiate/strengthen the education/research curricula on Membrane Sciences & Technologies (MST);
b) Support national and global development strategies in sectors such as water resources management, energy, health, food security, agriculture, environment protection and sanitation;
c) Promote partnerships among experts from the region and facilitate the implementation of scientific mobility programs;
d) Expand the convergence of activities and technology transfer between the academic and industrial research;
e) Foster the emergence of a dynamic and vibrant private industry and network that utilizes and leverages membrane technologies & processes;
f) Disseminate knowledge and present MST to political decision/policy; makers and influential members of the civil society in Africa.

Applications
In addition to water treatment processes, other relevant applications include
blood (or plasma) filtration and fractionation, protein concentration/purification for the biosciences (biotechnology and biopharmaceutical sectors), molecular capture and diagnostics (on 3D plates substrates and test kits), gas separation and purification, and the treatment of fluids in industries such as fuels and chemicals, food and beverages, microelectronics,

Objectives
- One international meeting every two years (avoid conflicts with other key international “membrane” events)
- Creation of a mailing list/listserv (or blog?) where members can openly communicate and exchange ideas on MST, at any time
- Creation of website (window of the organization)
- Summer schools and seminars (in Africa) on membranes/fluid treatment processes
- Build strong partnerships with other materials/MST/desalination/filtration networks in Africa, NAMS, ICIM, EMS, ICOM, ASEAN, etc
- Funding strategies to support/promote regional partnerships
- Postings for job offers and internships in Africa, awards prizes and distinctions, international venues, new books, journals and periodicals, listing of public/private institutions linked to MST etc.

Values and working philosophy
Given the urgency of needs and range of scientific and technological gaps, the partners encourage members to be PROACTIVE. Volunteering work and independent effort will be welcome. The search for talented and dedicated individual will be a top priority for the organization. All efforts aimed to disseminate knowledge about the relevance of these emerging and established (MST and fluid process technologies) will be essential.
